Dearest Reader,

New favorite Hoodie by Praying

I’m writing you from the van, barreling down the highway away from an electric show in Baton Rouge, just two days shy of Fat Tuesday. I hope everyone enjoys their Mardi Gras this year, and I would say I wish I could be there with you, drunk in the sun by the Mississippi in New Orleans, but I’m loving being on tour. Maybe next year I’ll see you out there.

Tour with Bright Eyes feels like home, I love these audiences so much. Deep music lovers with a keen appreciation for lyricism. I feel loved and welcomed by everyone who’s showing up early to watch our set, thank you for that. I had a great birthday, everyone was ridiculously sweet to me. We got a sugar high from cupcakes in the parking lot of the venue and ate one of the best gluten free pizzas I’ve ever had from a weird college bar across the way.

I’ve been despairing at the news, flipping back & forth between feelings of terror and rooted, steely bravery. I keep thinking, this is the time I was born into, and so it is the right time. Who knows what we’re gonna do with this mess we’re in, but we will have to figure it out together. We’re up against some serious brain rot, some 1984 shit, some War is Peace type shit. It makes me feel fucking insane, but I’m holding onto the knowledge that there are millions of us. Ready to rebuild something that resembles a future.

I’m including below my cover song for paying subscribers, one of my favorite songs ever, Is This It by the Strokes, played in open D.

I’m also sharing my March playlist, putting this one together made me emotional, since it includes Cola Boyy, the visionary artist we lost too soon.

I remain a big admirer of his art and his love and belief in The People. I was lucky to meet him when he was playing guitar with Juan Wauters, we played some shows together shortly before the release of The Navigator. He sang Beatles songs in the parking lot after the show and I loved his voice. I was inspired by that whole crew, and I was itching to break out of the Americana genre jail that was being built around me. I’m so grateful for that meeting and for the art Cola Boyy left us, we need it now more than ever. Also included in this playlist is one of my favorite bands of all time, The Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars. I will probably include them in next month’s playlist as well, in the meantime please do yourself a favor and watch the documentary about them.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Power to the People, and

don’t take any shit
