  • West Coast tour with Merce Lemon starts next Wednesday May 14th!

Spots we could use some help spreading the word are The Rio in Santa Cruz, Ventura Music Hall in Ventura, and The Crescent Ballroom in Phoenix. Tell your friends! I appreciate it very much!

Dearest Reader,

I’m back from sweet syrupy New Orleans, my first visit since I moved away. The weeks leading up to this trip were fraught with anxiety, I fear nostalgia like an angry Greek God. I am allergic to regret. Hell for me is the purgatory of visiting old stomping grounds, trapping us as we struggle to cross into a new chapters of our lives. I live by the Dylan lyric “Strike another match, go start anew.”

So I ventured into this trip worried the minute I landed back on that soggy soil I would burst into tears and think “How could I have left?”

Remarkably, it all felt right.

The band and I headed down for Jazz Fest, a festival I’ve played pretty much yearly since 2013. This was by far my favorite experience, hitting the stage right before the legendary Joan Jett. The crowd was right there with us, and the weather was merciful, enough clouds to shade us and no rain in sight. After our set we indulged in a group steak dinner at Crescent City Steaks that would make Tony Soprano proud, and walked through the quarter to catch a Midnight Preserves show at Preservation Hall.

I stayed on my own for a couple of days, visiting old friends across the city and eating like a king. I will always love New Orleans, for now it’ll be as a tourist. In the spirit of that, I present to you a list of a former local’s favorite haunts.

For my beloved paying subscribers I have a May playlist ready to go for you, but I’m still contemplating this month’s cover song. I’ll have that for you to enjoy hopefully by next week.

Take care of yourself, and

don’t take any shit

48 Hours in New Orleans:

*I am not in any way hired by the spots I recommend! If I ever am, I’ll tell you. I wouldn’t mind the money tbh!*

Coffee is plentiful in the Crescent City, and depending on what you’re looking for there’s a spot for every vibe..
