Dearest Reader,

This week I head back out on the road. Starting off with some Southern dates as a duo, opening the night for Rhiannon Giddens, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Mavis Staples. Grab your tickets here, this lineup is incred and I’m proud to be a part of it.

  • July 30th - The Momentary - Bentonville, Ark

  • Aug 1st - Hellbender by The Orange Peel - Asheville, NC

  • Aug 2nd - The Caverns - Pelham, TN

On August 5th I’ll be reuniting with the band to play a free show at Lincoln Center in New York City, then flying up to Canada for the Edmonton Folk Festival. Gonna be busy and I hope to see you out there.

Listening, Reading, Watching

I went to a couple of diy shows in Chicago yesterday that were totally mindblowing. I had been feeling a little lonely, a little lost (can you relate??) and the act of listening to music while facing the lake, people jumping in to cool down and the big orange moon hanging up above, heaven on earth.

Then on the way home my friend and I were biking on an overpass and heard a punk band rumbling underneath. We made a quick U turn and scrambled down there, all these kids losing their shit over a band covering Too Drunk To Fuck, I didn’t catch their name but I like it better that way.

I watched The Worst Person in the World and it wrecked me (in a good way). So tender and messy, oddly a period piece of what feels like a different cultural era, I’ve been meaning to see this for years and glad I finally did.

As for what I’m reading, it’s hard to pin that down. I’ve got a handful of books right now and I’m switching between them like a mad man. But I’m focusing on Fury by Clyo Mendoza.

In other news after years of frustration I finally got my bearings around recording at home. That means cover songs are gonna have some improved sound quality!!! No more iphone recordings unless I miss that particular vibe and think the song needs it.

I wanted to get the August cover song out to you all before I headed out, so below is my version of Mexico by Cake. Maybe when I’m back at home I will feel the spirit and record another one. I’ve loved this song since middle school, listening to it on repeat on my discman on the way to school feeling wistful about a love I hadn’t even had yet. Hope you enjoy, and thank you to all the paying subscribers! I am always trying to make this a more enjoyable listening & reading experience.
